Another Drug Boat Capsizes, This Time Near Wilder Ranch State Park

Authorities found four 20-pound bales of marijuana and believe someone made off with a lot more at Four Mile Beach, roughly 40 miles south of Half Moon Bay.

A 20-foot Panga boat capable of carrying 2,000 pounds of marijuana capsized in heavy surf at Four Mile Beach Monday morning. Officials from the Coast Guard, Homeland Security, Santa Cruz Sheriff's deputies and State Parks closed the beach and recovered 80 pounds of marijuana they believe is worth about $96,000.

Santa Cruz Sheriff's spokesman Ryan Kennedy said the marijuana was likely from Mexico and being transported to the East Coast (see video). He said the hidden harbors along the Santa Cruz coast are convenient places to unload marijuana from Mexico and bring it inland, despite the fact that better quality marijuana is grown and available in stores in Santa Cruz.

Four Mile Beach is near Wilder Ranch State Park and is four miles north of Santa Cruz. Another Panga boat was captured July, 29, by Davenport.
