UPDATE: CONFIRMED: Shareef Allman is Dead

Police are confirming the suspect shot this morning in Sunnyvale is indeed Shareef Allman, the man responsible for yesterday's shootings in Cupertino and Sunnyvale. Details were provided at a press conference.

Updated 12:25 p.m., Oct. 6: At a press conference at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Santa Clara County Sherrif Laurie Smith gave details as to how Shareef Allman, the man responsible for shootings in Cupertino and Sunnyvale on Wednesday, was located and shot earlier that morning.

Smith said three deputies were on "routine patrol" in the Birdland neighborhood of Sunnyvale, near 934 Lorne Way, and stopped to talk to each other when one of the deputies noticed movement behind a vehicle.

The deputies saw a man matching the description of Allman crouched behind the car.

Smith said the man displayed aggressive behavior and brandished a handgun.

"He displayed, in a threatening way, a firearm," she said.

At that point, Smith said all three deputies fired on the suspect, who died at the scene.

"The deputies ID'd him as the suspect they were looking for, because he matched the description," Smith said. "Right now, we believe this is the suspect from yesterday's incident."

Smith said it is unclear whether or not anyone was in the house where the suspect was crouched behind the vehicle, although neighbors at the scene have been telling media that a family was seen being escorted out of the home and placed in police cars for safety.

Smith said it is still unknown how the suspect evaded the massive manhunt executed by police for 24 hours. She said, since this morning's shooting of the suspect took place in Sunnyvale, that the sherrif's office is allowing Sunnyvale Police to conduct the investigation.

"It's still early in the investigation," she said. "There are a lot of people working on this case right now."

Smith said the three deputies who spotted and shot the suspect this morning all had less than five years' experience on the force. Their names may be released later in the day.

"They were exceptional, great deputies who did a great job at the scene," Smith said.

The three deputies are currently being interviewed by Sunnyvale detectives.

Updated 9:34 a.m., Oct. 6: Lt. Rick Sung, public information officer for the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, has confirmed that Shareef Allman, the Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant employee responsible for yesterday's shootings in Cupertino and Sunnyvale, was shot and killed in front of a home near 934 Lorne Way in Sunnyvale at approximately 7:20 this morning.

Allman's body is lying under a tarp in the driveway of a home on Lorne Way. The Santa Clara County Coroner was on route to the scene of the crime, which is cordoned off with police tape. Thorne Way is located just one block off of Homestead Road in Sunnyvale's "Birdland" neighborhood.

Sung is reporting that the suspect was shot by multiple police officers who had been working around the clock since yesterday on the search parties in the area.

Residents of Lorne Way in Sunnyvale where Allman was shot were shaken this morning, at the realization that Allman was in their midst overnight.

Early this morning, a resident of Lorne Way said police had come to her door after the shooting to make sure everyone was OK. The neighbor said she asked them, "Did you guys get the guy?" and the officers said Yes.

Another neighbor, Helen Bernaciak, who lives two doors down from the home where the shooting occurred, said she woke up to a terrible commotion.

"Oh my God, it was horrible," she said. Afterward she heard sirens and police began to show up in droves. "All I can see is so many policemen," Bernaciak said around 8 a.m. "I don't know where there are any others anywhere, they're all here."

She said a woman who lives in the home closest to where the shooting happened was taken outside with her baby and put in a police car. Police later escorted a man to the patrol car to join them, she said.

Bernaciak said police had searched her backyard on Wednesday but she didn't believe Allman was in her neighborhood.

"I wouldn't have been able to sleep last night if I thought he was that close to me," she said.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith has announced a press conference to take place in San Jose at 11:30 a.m. today. Patch will cover the press conference.
