‘Creepy’ Video Has Some Coastside Residents Wary About Hiking Montara Mountain

It’s yet to be verified by authorities whether it’s a prank or for real, but this video originally posted on LiveLeak about a week ago has some coastal residents feeling very uneasy about hiking Montara Mountain these days.

In the video titled “I made a "Friend" on the Mountain...Wait for it...” a masked individual films a woman walking up a trail on Montara Mountain. The person who posted the video writes, “Just the way I like to spend my time once I'm at the "Peak"...;) I'll upload the rest of the video later…”

The police and Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) park patrol are dealing with the situation and have the video poster’s contact information, according to a Pacifica Beach Coalition spokesperson, who notified Patch about the video and called the video “creepy and scary.”

It's scaring a lot of people judging by the number of posts on Facebook about it. Sally Pemerton is "totally creeped out" and it makes her "nervous about hiking alone." Sue Bliss says it's "creepy and scary" and "always go with a buddy." Kathy Llorente says "it's probably a gag, but creepy is the right word" and Karen Colucci wonders, "Is this for real? I thought it was a joke. The person looks like a woman. So bizarre!"

K.P. writes on Patch's Facebook page: "The person filmed in this video is my friend. She is fine. But I have a feeling she will not be hiking alone anymore. This is a horrible video and NOT FUNNY. Please keep posting — perhaps we can eventually identify the person who made it."

According to Cap. Daniel Steidle of the Pacifica Police Department, a bulletin about a suspicious circumstance in the Montara Mountain area was sent out on Sept. 26 to other law enforcement agencies in the county.

“When someone posts a video like this, it warrants law enforcement’s attention,” said Steidle. “We have identified the individual and once we locate him, will find out what his intent is and put the public’s mind at ease. No crime was committed but we take it seriously when something like this is put out there.”

Pacifica Police are taking the lead on this case even though the park is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service.
