El Granada Man Seriously Injured, Burlingame Man Dead After Motorcycle Collision With CHP On Highway 101

The accident took place in Redwood City on Thursday night.

Joseph Coles, 19, of El Granada has been identified as the man who suffered major injuries on Thursday night after the motorcycle he was riding with Burlingame man Grant Coles, 45, collided with a California Highway Patrol (CHP) car on Highway 101, according to Art Montiel, CHP spokesman.

The crash occurred after a short-lived attempt by the riders on the motorcycle to elude the CHP after patrol officers tried to pull them over for violating the speed limit on Highway 101 north of Ralston Avenue at about 9:30 p.m., according to Montiel.

The motorcycle exited the highway at Holly Street, where the men attempted to elude CHP officers before re-entering southbound Highway 101 at Harbor Boulevard, Montiel said.

As the motorcycle approached Brittan Avenue, a patrol car on the on-ramp to Highway 101 began accelerating to assist in the pursuit.

For reasons yet to be determined, the motorcycle crossed several lanes of traffic and into the path of the patrol vehicle entering the freeway, Montiel said.

Both of the men on the motorcycle were transported to Stanford
Hospital, where Grant Coles succumbed to his injuries, Montiel said.

Coles suffered major injuries in the crash. The officer sustained minor injuries but did not require medical treatment, Montiel said.

The CHP is still trying to determine who was driving the
motorcycle at the time of the collision. Witnesses are asked to contact
Redwood City CHP Officer K. Steinkraus at (650) 369-6261.

grant coles is my big brother .i feel chp was wrong to violate there own high speed policy .we will be nailing chp for this .this will cost chp millions .just watch and see
Paul Goltierri February 12, 2011 at 08:11 pm
The CHP will just set more speed traps and give out more bogus citations to cover this disaster they created. California is going to hell in hand-basket made in china designed by politicians.
Merrily February 12, 2011 at 11:17 pm
Why were the 2 men speeding away from the CHP??? Why were they avoiding getting pulled over???
Let's take some responsibility here! I am sorry for your family's loss but they didn't have to end this way. :(

yes my brother was wrong for running but chp violated policy and chased the cop that hit my brother was going the wrong way on the on ramp.and with a passenger on the bike the danger level goes up big time .they should have stopped the persuit ..and i agree he should have stopped or let his son off the back of the bike .but chp violated policy.plain and simple if my brother would have been alone he would have lost them.im not saying it right because its not he should have stopped .he made a bad choice

typical story....these two idiots try and outrun the CHP, crash, and now its the CHP's fault.
come on...The Coles are a menace to the highway. Im sure they were doing 65 mph before the pursuit began. Just my thoughts...
Paulooka February 14, 2011 at 12:50 pm
Doug, what would your comment be if the CHP had called off the chase, and let's say a 1/2 mile down the road their reckless operation of the motorcycle caused an accident that resulted in the death of a completely un-involved person? I lost my mother in a crash to someone's careless operation of their vehicle on the freeway. Please stop defending a ridiculous point of view: That somehow your relatives' "right" to endanger the rest of us was somehow infringed? Give it up.

Exactly.....
polcat838 February 16, 2011 at 07:29 pm
My question about CHP policy is this, "Is writing a speeding ticket so important that you would endanger the lives of every one on the road to do it?" Did they really have to chase this rider in excess of a hundred miles an hour for a speeding ticket? At some point harm reduction has to become part of the thought process. Now what about the CHP going the wrong direction on the freeway off ramp. What if it was your relative not involved in the chase, that had the head on collision with the CHP and died, would it then all of a sudden be wrong? I don't defend the blatent disregard for the endangerment of themselves or others, nor the disregard of the speeding limits by the motorcyclists. I do have a problem with CHP officers playing cowboy with a five thousand pound lethal weapon. Thats what I call going the wrong way on a freeway to catch a speeder. It was a bad situation with a very bad ending. I see it as poor choices on both sides. In the end the actions of both sides will be judged by a power greater than myself. Amen

I don't see anywhere in the report that the CHP was in a high speed chase in excess of 100 mph or violated policy or that a cop was going the wrong way on a ramp. Where are you getting this information?

Here is a link

Rocky February 17, 2011 at 12:57 pm
The link and Mercury News article says nothing about 100 mph or how CHP violated any policy or anything about CHP going wrong way on a ramp. All I can see from these reports is that someone on a motorcycle tried to run away from being stopped by the CHP for speeding and after a short chase, the motorcycle driver ran into another CHP car, killing either the driver or the passenger on the motorcycle.

Grant Coles is the brother of my boyfriend. Although I did not know him I know his story. We all seem to forget that everyone has a story that makes us who we are. These stories define who we are and the decisions that we make in life. The bottom line is that a mother lost her son, a father lost his son, a man lost his brother, a brother and sister lost their father, a granddaughter lost her grandpa and the list goes on. The reason behind a death does not take away from the fact that family and friends are grieving. Those who live in glass houses should not cast stones. Let's keep in mind that we all have a story that maks us human. The comments about who was right and who was wrong should not be a part of this discussion. RIP Grant you are free now. Joey I wish you a full and speedy recovery. To the rest of the Coles family and friends, my heart goes out to you.

A family is grieving here Frank. Do you really need to resort to name calling ie: "idiots". I feel truly blessed to have finally come across the perfect person. I bet you have never made one wrong choice in your life. It's easy to judge others when you are not and have not walked in their shoes. I pray that this never happens to a family member or close friend of yours.
Sara Trulove February 20, 2011 at 03:00 am
I completely agree with you Doug. The CHP should've called off the pursuit and just gotten Grant at his house later or something. It was for speeding, not like he just robbed a bank or shot someone. Also, agree with you on having a passenger. The passenger isn't driving and therefore has no control over what driver does and shouldn't be put at risk. Finally, I have been friends with Grant for almost 10 yrs., he's a very experienced rider and would NEVER have cut across 3 lanes of traffic to smack right into patrol car. Patrol car sure wanted to nail him at any cost. Grant did make a bad choice, but it wasn't worth his life. CHP has been getting noticed and reprimanded for similar policy violations lately in news and I think they should be held accountable, especially when it causes a fatality.

Again, I note that people are making statements here that are not supported by any of the published reports that I'm aware of. Where are you getting your information?

stop blaming CHP for the bad choices these motorist made, why dont you think that was his time to go, i lost one of my cousins for drunk driving and i would have loved CHP to put behind bars than in the coroners van.
