Former Church Usher Facing 8 Years in Prison After Taking Plea Deal in Child Molestation Case

The San Mateo man used to work at a church in Daly City, where the alleged misconduct took place, according to authorities.

By Bay City News Service:

A former head usher at a church in Daly City has pleaded no contest to felony child molestation charges, San Mateo County prosecutors said.

Julian Lopez, 69, of San Mateo, entered the plea on Friday and faces up to eight years in prison when he is sentenced on July 25.

Lopez was the head usher at Ministerios Mundial in 2008, when prosecutors said he allegedly molested a 10-year-old girl and threatened to harm her parents if she told anyone. The victim told her mother, who notified church officials.

Lopez apparently confessed to the misdeed and was removed as usher, but stayed in the church and police were not notified, prosecutors said.

The victim later reported the incident to police and investigators eventually found a second victim who was also molested in 2008, according to the district attorney's office.

Lopez faced a possible sentence of life in prison before accepting the plea deal Friday. He remains in custody on no-bail status, prosecutors said.
