High Speed Chase Down Highways 92 and 1 Ends in Arrest

CHP used road spikes in an attempt to stop the vehicle on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz.

A 31-year-old man driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance was arrested in Santa Cruz Monday evening after California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers chased the suspect from Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz on a high speed chase.

At 6:40 p.m., San Mateo County Sheriff’s Officers (SMCSO) were dispatched to a report of man dancing wildly around the outside of a parked pick-up truck on westbound Highway 92 between the upper and lower Highway 35, according to Redwood City CHP officer Amelia Jack.

The officers made contact with the male suspect, who they determined was under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance. The suspect then fled in his vehicle, a 2002 black Toyota pick-up truck, driving at a high rate of speed on Highway 92 toward Half Moon Bay, said Jack.

SMCSO chased the vehicle down Highway 92 when at approximately 6:56 p.m. the CHP took over the pursuit and pursued the vehicle on Highway 1 south all the way down to the Santa Cruz County line.

There, Santa Cruz CHP officers were waiting just beyond the county line on Highway 1 with spike strips, deflating the suspect’s tires and making the vehicle undriveable.
