Highway 1 in El Granada Now Open

Fallen power lines closed Highway 1 for two and a half hours Thursday.

Fallen power lines due to construction work closed Highway 1 in El Granada Thursday around 12:20 p.m., according to San Mateo County's Office of Emergency Services.

The fallen power lines near Sam's Chowder House affected the El Granada area between Capistrano and Coronado, and Alameda at Valencia, cutting power off from about 1,500 customers.

According to a report in the Half Moon Bay Review, a contractor apparently dislodged a pair of power poles causing the power outage.

Local businesses were forced to close. Sam's Chowder House lost all power including their phone system. But that didn't stop them from setting up Sam's ChowderMobile to serve lobster rolls and clam chowder in the parking lot. They also set up a generator and were back up serving their guests while PG&E worked on fixing the power line.

PG&E workers arrived to assess the damage and around 2:55 p.m., Highway 1 and Alameda in El Granada reopened.
