Inmate Hangs Himself in Santa Cruz County Jail

A 41-year-old man died in an apparent suicide on Sunday.

An inmate in the Santa Cruz County Jail died in custody Sunday morning in an apparent suicide by hanging, according to the county Sheriff's Office.

The 41-year-old inmate, whose identity has not been released yet, was arrested on Friday on a felony charge of making threats and booked into the jail around 11 p.m., according to Lt. Fred Plageman.

Housed in a single cell, the inmate received medication at 5 a.m. and breakfast later in the morning. He was alert and not displaying suspicious behavior in a cell check at 10 a.m., but was found unconscious and unresponsive at 11:20 a.m.

He was declared dead at 11:40 a.m., Plageman said.

You're a liar. The only place to hang oneself outside of their cell, is in the dayroom, where everyone would be able to see them. And the doctor never goes into housing units. You're a lying troll.

Hi Debra, I am working with an organization that is doing something about the four deaths that have happened since August to expose the inhumane conditions of the county jail. We would love to hear your perspective and explain what we're doing. Please email me at: sinbarras@gmail.com
