Main St. Fire Extinguished by Sheriff's Deputies

Deputies got control of fire early Sunday morning at commercial building in Half Moon Bay.

An electrical fire at in Half Moon Bay was extinguished early on Sunday morning by two San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies Chris Laughlin was patrolling Highway 1 at Seymour St. at 3:40 a.m. Sunday morning when he noticed smoke arising from a nearby location, the Sheriff's Office said.

Upon investigation, Laughlin found that the fire was coming from 840 Main St., a building which houses Main St. Hair Design, and Coastside Dentistry.

Laughlin found the rear of the building fully engulfed in flames and contacted Coastside Fire and fellow deputies for support, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's Deputy John Sanchez and Laughlin were able to get control of visible flames using fire extinguishers from their patrol cars, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"By the time the fire truck arrived, Deputy Laughlin had nearly put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher from his squad car," said Ellen Joseph, artist and owner of Ellen Joseph Art Gallery.

"Main Street Hair Design was spared significant damage to the inside, but the exterior will require repairs," she said.

Coastside Fire identified and was able to extinguish the internal areas of the building that had caught fire, the Sheriff's Office reported.

Fire officials did not encounter any suspicious circumstances and believe that the cause of the fire was due to an electrical problem, the Sheriff's Office said.
