Motorcycle Hits 15-Year-Old in Moss Beach

Highway 1 accident sends girl to Stanford Hospital this morning.

A 15-year-old girl walking across Highway 1 on Tuesday morning in Moss Beach was hit by a motorcycle and airlifted to Stanford Hospital, the California State Highway Patrol reported.

Moss Beach resident Mark Kowart, 48, was riding his Suzuki motorcycle south on Highway 1 at 6:50 a.m. when he hit the girl walking eastbound across the highway at Virginia St., CHP Public Information Officer Scott Niemeth said.

The girl was on her way to school when she was struck by the motorcycle, according to Niemeth. She was airlifted to Stanford Hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

"She has pain, but no broken bones," Niemeth said.

According to Niemeth, there is no report of Kowart being injured or seeking medical assistance after the accident.

Close to a month ago on Dec. 9, Moss Beach resident Cathy Silva was near the same intersection on Highway 1. Silva was found lying on the shoulder of the highway in front of El Gran Amigo Taqueria.

Authorities temporarily closed Highway 1 to respond to Tuesday morning's incident.

Christine, how do you suggest we go about it? Thank you! Manu

Manu, As I mentioned in my blog about this article, smarter people have tried getting something done via the "correct channels" already. So I suggest some steps to doing it ourselves. http://halfmoonbay.patch.com/blog_posts/flashing-crosswalks-in-highway-1-in-half-moon-bay

My kids had an idea to get people’s attention about the issue: Making big signs along the highway to point out “Slow down” or “Kids cross the road here” Local schools could help out in making signs. Any volunteers from: 1) Farallone 2) EG Elementary 3) Hatch 4) Wilkinson 5) Sea crest 6) Home schoolers 7) Cunha 8) Highschool

Christine, there was a mid coast community meeting tonight. I saw the notice too late.. here is a link to a study I was also unaware of and a member of the mother's club knew of this: http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/Attachments/planning/PDFs/Midcoast%20Mobility/Draft%20SMM%20Ph%202%20Study%20v5%20Low%20Res.pdf Looks like efforts may be on the way, but we need something for the interim. Thank you for voicing your concerns.

Twelve-year-old Julian Ruiz was struck by an SUV while crossing Highway 1 on his bike. The accident took place in Moss Beach on Dec. 3, 2009 around 5:20pm. KTVU published a video about the dangers of Highway 1 in May 2010. "Surgeons amputated the sixth grader's right foot after he was struck by a suburban while riding his bike across highway one during rush hour. He also had a broken femur and pelvis. He was only two blocks from away from home." "Julian's attorney filed claims against the state and San Mateo County, saying not addressing highway hazards while approving more housing makes them irresponsible."
