Police Activities League Hosts Bike Rodeo For Kids

Current and retired Half Moon Bay Police officers donate their time for a bike safety event that strives to form a bond with the community.

The Police Activities League (PAL), which holds quarterly sporting events for soccer, softball and volleyball, held a Bike Rodeo this past Saturday at Cunha's Middle School. Children in Kindergarten through 8th grade were encouraged to participate in this free event, which emphasized bicycle road safety rules such as obeying traffic signs, watching all directions for cars, and using hand signals when stopping and turning.

The turnout was smaller than what was anticipated, but all the kids had a good time and won valuable raffle prizes, from bike helmets to T-shirts. One lucky youngster won a bike. Food and drink was provided by Cameron Palmer, owner of Cameron's Restaurant. The Bike Works provided a technician to perform bike inspections and adjustments free of charge.

Current and retired Half Moon Bay Police officers donate their time for these events in an effort to form bonds with the children and families of the community.

Shahrzad Pantera, who helped form PAL two years ago, was on hand to help run the rodeo. "I'm so proud of the officer's dedication to the community," she said.

Police Chief Lee Violett echoed her sentiment and added, "It has been a pleasure working with the men and women of the police force during this challenging time."
