The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities are continuing their search into the early morning for a man who went missing after his canoe overturned off the coast of San Francisco Wednesday evening, the Coast Guard said.
Three people were in the canoe near Treasure Island when it overturned. Two of the boaters swam to shore and contacted the Coast Guard at around 6:15 p.m. when they could not find the third boater or the canoe, Lt. Junior Grade Liezl Nicholas said.
The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter and two boats, while Sausalito and San Francisco fire and police boats were called in to assist with the search.
Shoreside assistance is being provided by the city of Berkeley and national and state parks officials. The man was still missing as of 2 a.m. this morning, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jared Buckmiller said.
The Coast Guard asks anyone with knowledge of the whereabouts of the missing canoer to please call (415) 399-3451 or 911.
