Sheriff's Office Warns of Vehicle Break-Ins on Coast

Chilly temperatures haven't kept car burglars away in Half Moon Bay. According to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, several thefts in unlocked vehicles occurred on the coast over the weekend.

Lt. L. Williams of the sheriff's Coastside Patrol said residents should be certain to lock their vehicles, even when the car is parked in a residential driveway.

She warns that an unlocked vehicle is an open invitation to a thief.

"Auto burglars typically steal items of value from the center console, glove compartment and anything on and under the seats of your vehicle," she said in a news release.

Items of particular interest include purses, wallets, GPS units, cellphones, cash and various small electronics.

In order reduce the risk of becoming a victim, the sheriff's office suggests keeping items in the vehicle out of view, securely locked in the trunk or brought inside the home.
