Sheriff's Deputy Shoots, Kills Half Moon Bay 18-Year-Old Woman

Sheriff's officials say they responded to a report of a "violent woman" Tuesday night.

An 18-year-old woman was shot and killed by a San Mateo County sheriff's deputy in a coastside housing complex Tuesday night, and she has been identified as Yanira Serrano-Garcia of Half Moon Bay, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office.

San Mateo County sheriff's spokeswoman Rebecca Rosenblatt said deputies responded at about 9:20 p.m. to a report of a violent female who was possibly armed at the Moonridge housing somplex on Miramontes Point Road, located east of state Highway 1 near Half Moon Bay.

"Upon arrival there was a confrontation with the subject and fearing for his life, the deputy discharged his weapon," she said in a press statement.  "Fire and Medics were called to the scene as well as the Coroner’s Office who subsequently declared the individual, an 18-year-old female as being deceased."

The woman was later identified as Serrano-Garcia.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

A joint investigation by San Mateo County's sheriff's office and district attorney's office is underway into the shooting of Serrano-Garcia.
