UPDATE: Missing Redwood City Man's Body Found

His body was found in a ravine in unincorporated Belmont Hills Thursday afternoon. Cause of death is being investigated.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and officials from the New Haven School District in the East Bay are reporting that the body of Christopher Ryan, a Redwood City man who went missing earlier this week, was found Thursday afternoon.

Though retired at the time of his death, Ryan had been a teacher of English and social science at James Logan High School in Union City since 1994, and was beloved by his students. He also worked briefly as an administrator for the school district. The district sent out a statement Friday morning indicating grief counseling will be offered today for those mourning Ryan's death.

Ryan was reported missing by his sister, Katie Glapzel, on Tuesday. Glapzel said she had last seen her brother in Redwood City on Monday morning, and that calls to his cell phone had gone unanswered for more than 24 hours, which was uncommon for Ryan, who regularly kept in touch with family.

After adding Ryan to the Missing Persons system, deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office reported that his car was found off the side of the road near the junction of Highways 280 and 92 in San Mateo County late Wednesday night.

Ryan was considered at-risk because he required regular medication for a medical condition. His car was found with his medication and cell phone in it.

The Sheriff's Office told Patch that Ryan's body was discovered by a search-and-rescue team near Vista 3 off Highway 280 in unincorporated Belmont Hills.

Currently, the cause of Ryan's death is unknown. An investigation is now being conducted by the County coroner's office.

Patch will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
