City, Sheriff's Office to Hold Youth Summit

Event initiated in part as response to 2011 gang shootings in Half Moon Bay.

As part of their response to last year's gang shootings in Half Moon Bay, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is sponsoring a Youth Summit later this month at . The meeting will culminate in a special listening session for the Half Moon Bay City Council to hear the perspectives of Coastside youth regarding local issues, problems and potential solutions.

"I'm looking forward to hearing what our local youth have to say about what's important to them," said Half Moon Bay Mayor Allan Alifano.

Held in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Activities League, the and the city of Half Moon Bay, the idea for allocating increased funding towards youth programming in Half Moon Bay as a strategy to curb gang participation among youth and provide alternatives was first mentioned at an Aug. 30 . The meeting was called by the city and Sheriff's Office in response to the which took place in the city's Arleta Park neighborhood earlier that month.

Aimed at youth age 12-18, attending youth will hear talks from NASA astronaut Ed Lu and Willie Stokes, a motivational speaker and former gang member. Youth will have the chance to attend workshops on enterpreneurship, cyberbullying, diversity, drug and alcohol awareness, body image, and health/nutrition. Workshops will also be held for parents.

"The Half Moon Bay City Council will be actively engaged in the summit throughout the day," said Lt. Lisa Williams.

The Coastside Youth Summit will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Half Moon Bay High School and is free of charge. Admission is open to children age 12-18 and their parents. Lunch will be provided at the event courtesy of the Half Moon Bay Lions Club. There will be lunchtime displays, a live DJ and raffle prizes.
