Damaging Erosion to Accelerate as Sea Levels Rise

We've already seen the relentless tugging of the ocean on our beaches and bluffs, but things are about to get much worse according to a new report by California Watch.

The report cites a study by the National Research Council that delved into the impact of sea level rise on the West Coast. Within 20 years, the NRC expects sea levels locally to rise 4 - 30 centimeters. On the high end of that scale homes, public buildings, even San Francisco International Airport will all be swamped.

The report warns that measures already in place will do little to slow the encroachment of the sea,  “Although coastal armoring can buy time, today’s seawalls and revetments will eventually be overwhelmed by sea-level rise and increasing wave heights. Sand dunes and beaches, which consist primarily of unconsolidated sand, provide little resistance to severe wave attack, especially at times of elevated sea level.”

The report warns that the impact of El Nino, storms and high tides will all be more severe as sea levels rise.
