New Bike Racks to be Installed in Downtown Half Moon Bay

Grant and private donation allowed purchase of nine new racks to be installed in coming weeks.

The City of Half Moon Bay is getting ready to install nine in the coming weeks, thanks to a private donation and a local grant from the county's Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance.

Six of the racks will be in the shape of a bicycle — a design that facilitates parallel bicycle parking and leaves space on the sidewalk for passing pedestrians.

According to Mo Sharma, engineer for the city of Half Moon Bay, pairs of blue, green and red versions of the rack will be purchased. Each will be coated in thermoplastic for durability.

The other three will be hoop-shaped, Sharma said, and designed to resemble an outline of a coffee cup, a fish and a bunch of green grapes.

Minneapolis-based company DERO Bike Racks are the manufacturers of the racks.

The city is still determining the final location of where the racks will be installed, according to Half Moon Bay City Manager Laura Snideman.

City councilmember Marina Fraser worked on receiving funding for the project.

A $5,000 donation for the bicycle racks was given to the city from Half Moon Bay residents Jude and Julia Damasco, owners of local firm Damasco and Associates.

With this donation, the Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance matched 50 percent of the cost to purchase and install the racks. This matching program is available for employers throughout the county.
