New County Employee Paid Above Maximum Scale

The new worker will receive $192,780 per year.

At a time when governments from the community to the national level are struggling with tight budgets, layoffs, and the elimination of programs, San Mateo County has just hired a new department head at a pay level above the maximum for that position, according to the San Jose Mercury-News .

The newspaper reports that Michael Coultrip will be paid $192,780 per year to head the county's retirement system. That's five percent above the maximum pay for that position. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the generous pay.

The decision is in stark contrast to the city of Scranton, PA, which last week slashed the pay of all government workers to minimum wage.
