PHOTO: Post 9/11, HMB Firefighters Memorialize Fallen NYC Peers

Half Moon Bay Patch's contribution to the national 9/11 photo gallery posted today on Huffington Post.

Just days after the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, 63 firefighters from Northern California flew to New York City to offer assistance. Three came from the fire station in Half Moon Bay, Calif.: Lane Lee, Hyland Hogan and Paul Cole.

When they returned, they brought home a fire ax retired from Ladder Company No. 3, a NYC division which lost 12 members that day. Half Moon Bay firefighters Lee, Gary Riddell and John Riddell memorialized the ax along with pictures of their fallen comrades in NYC. The plaque is now back in New York.

The inscription reads:

Although this axe has been retired in their honor, we are sure they would all agree: "In case of emergency, break glass."
