An 8.9 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan Thursday at 9:46 p.m. PST, according to a National Weather Service official.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists explain to Patch what caused Japan's worst earthquake in modern history, and what resources we have to prepare for the next emergency disaster.
