Vote Expected Tonight: CalFire or a Stand-Alone Department

The heated issue has prompted a grand jury report and a recall effort. After months of acrimonious skirmishes, the Coastside Fire Protection District Board is expected to make a decision tonight.

The Coastside Fire Protection District Board of Directors is expected to vote tonight on whether to begin the process of creating a stand-alone fire department, or to allow CalFire to place a competitive bid to continue providing Coastside fire protection services.

The meeting will get underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Coastside Fire Protection District Board Room, 1191 Main St.

CalFire took over fire protection services in 2008. Its cost-effective and efficient service have been praised by a local grand jury as a model for other areas.

CalFire was hired after years of internal struggles within a stand-alone department.

The stand-alone model is supported by Board Members Michael Alifano, Douglas Mackintosh, and Gary Riddell.  A recall effort has been launched against the trio because of their push to oust CalFire.
