Voters to Decide on Parcel Tax Measures, County Supervisor Today

Voters in four Bay Area counties and in Santa Cruz County will decide on 12 school parcel tax measures in a special election today.

In San Mateo County, where three measures are on local ballots, voters also will choose one of six candidates who are running for a seat on the county Board of Supervisors. This is the first time the county has filled a seat on the board through an all-mail election.

The winning candidate in the supervisors' race will replace Mark Church, who became the county's assessor-clerk-recorder on Jan. 1.

Four current elected officials are running for the position: Burlingame Mayor Terry Nagel, Millbrae City Councilwoman Gina Papan, San Mateo Union High School District Trustee Dave Pine and San Mateo County Community College District Trustee Richard Holober.

Also running are businessman Michael Stogner and retired technical writer and project manager Demetrios Nikas.

The measures in San Mateo County are for the San Carlos Elementary School District, the Ravenswood City School District and Jefferson Union High School District.

In Alameda County, the measures are for the New Haven Unified School District in Union City and the Pleasanton Unified School District.

Voters in Contra Costa County will decide the fate of parcel tax measures for the John Swett Unified School District and the Lafayette School District.

In Santa Clara County, proposed measures would benefit the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, the Sunnyvale School District, the Cupertino Union School District and the Los Altos Elementary School District.

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District also includes part of Santa Cruz County.

The school parcel tax measures all need two-thirds approval.
