Golf, like other springtime sports,  is taken very seriously by the Half Moon Bay High School students who play the game. Usually the seniors are the ones who dominate at golf, but this year the lower classmen are making great strides.

Not only are the students making an impact on the game, but also the new coach Eric Denault. This 5th grade teacher at Farallone View decided to make some time in his busy schedule to coach the team.

“I’ve been playing golf for a long time now, but this is my first time coaching. I hope to use the skills I’ve learned to better the players,” said Denault.

Although Coach Denault is making an impressive debut, we mustn’t forget about the previous coach, Don Prestosz. Known as Mr. Prestosz to his students, he coached the team for 11 years.

Being an avid golfer, Prestosz was able to implement his skill to the players. He played a large role in the success of the golf team during the past decade.

“I still communicate with some of the players, but I don’t go to the games because I don’t want to interfere,” said Prestosz. When asked why he decided to retire coaching he said, “It was about time!”

As for the players, they have been on a hot streak, winning their last few games. Freshman Brooke Williams and junior Derek Nazar led Half Moon Bay in the Peninsula Ocean League game against El Camino.

Andy Olson, sophomore, is an active member of the team.

“I wanted to try something different, I think golf is important because it can help you get ahead in business, like playing with your boss who also knows how to play golf,” said Olson, looking toward his future.

Though golf is a little underrepresented at Half Moon Bay High, Olson’s point that it is important in the corporate world is a great reason to get out and play golf.

If you’re not into playing golf, you can always come support the team. Come join the fun and experience the dominating Cougars in action.
