Puente in Pescadero Celebrates Children and Literacy

Every year, more than 100 children from the La Honda Pescadero Unified School District and their parents come to celebrate Día de los niños, a traditional holiday in Mexico.

Puente de la Costa Sur (PUENTE) and the La Honda Pescadero Unified School District hosted their 4th annual Día de los niños/Día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) celebration Friday at Pescadero Elementary School.

It was an evening of family fun with bilingual books, games, raffles, and food that ends with the distribution of gift bags to every child. The event was free, and participants were only asked to bring a dish to share.

Each year Puente collects and distributes books, toys, and school supplies generously donated by individuals, organizations, and faith communities. This year, the tradition inspired college students from Notre Dame de Namur University to make the drive from Belmont on their school’s Day of Service. In one afternoon, these volunteers created 150 gift bags stuffed with books, toys, and school supplies, as well as hand-written cards to hand out to the children who were in attendance in April.

As the region’s only Community Resource Center, Puente serves the San Mateo County South Coast communities of Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar, and San Gregorio, and has done so since 1998. Puente both advocates for their communities and leverages resources that foster economic prosperity and security, and that promote individual and community health and wellness. Puente supports local leaders and work together with our neighbors creating solutions for our diverse communities.
