HMB High School Could Get Security Cameras

Read a preview of tonight's Cabrillo Unified meeting in Half Moon Bay.

The Cabrillo Unified School Board will discuss substitute teachers, the installation of security cameras, alternatives to summer school and the allocation of Measure K funds at tonight's meeting.

After the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing eased requirements for substitute teachers who have yet to take the state mandated California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST), Cabrillo Unified encountered difficulty hiring substitute teachers who had already passed the CBEST.

To resolve this, the governing board will move to allow 15 substitutes on CBEST waivers. At the same meeting, the board will discuss hiring five substitute teachers.

The board will review the report on the Security Camera Pilot Program and discuss the possible implementation of cameras throughout the district. A trial installation of three security cameras, installed last June at (HMBHS), cost $8,000 in an effort to reduce crime and enhance safety at HMBHS.

Due to budget cuts, Cabrillo Unified will no longer be able to offer K-12 summer school. However, the board will consider alternatives that will continue to enhance student’s education during the summer.

These alternatives include readiness programs for children entering kindergarten, K-5 literacy and math intervention programs for at risk students, grades 9-12 credit recovery for students at risk of not graduating and a migrant education program fund for eligible students.

Finally, the board will address how to distribute an estimated $1.6 million from the Measure K bond. Approved in 1996, the $35 million school facilities bond has been used for various school needs from new furniture to restoring leaky roofs. The 25-year bond will expire in 2021 and the board will further discuss the potential of funding future projects with similar bonds.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the District offices at 498 Kelly Ave. in Half Moon Bay.
