Sea Crest School Shines at Cross Country Meet

Half Moon Bay school has unprecedented showing at Small Schools Intermediate League championship.

Cross country runners from Half Moon Bay's gave an outstanding performance on Nov. 9 at the Small Schools Intermediate League championship meet.

The competition took place at the Crystal Springs course in Belmont.

The Sea Crest boys' team finished first in their division, ahead of eight other schools. Four team members finished in the top ten out of 88 runners overall. A fifth Sea Crest runner finished in 11th place.

Completing 1.6 miles in 10:33, Sea Crest student Ryan Stefko took home the top individual prize among the boys.

With a time of 12:02 on the 1.6 mile course, Ali Pond was the top finisher for the Sea Crest girls' team. She placed third out of 38 female runners.

The girls' team came in second place out of five schools, and five of the Sea Crest girls' runners finished in the top 20.

Coach Deirdre Harger was pleased with her team's performance.

"Some of these kids had never competed like this before," Harger said. "The season goal is to continually improve over the season and have your best performance on championship day."

"These teams did all that, and their spirit and support for each other was amazing," she said.

"I've been a runner for over 30 years, and coaching these kids has really renewed my passion for running," Harger said.
