University Place resident Johanna Herrera, a recent graduate of Everest College-Tacoma, has been selected as the college’s 2012 Dream Award winner, the school announced today.
Herrera earned a diploma after completing the medical insurance billing and coding program at Everest College-Tacoma. Her tenacious drive to succeed led to the annual award, which recognizes graduates who have improved their lives through education. As a Dream Award winner, Herrera will receive a $2,500 Everest College scholarship to pursue an advanced program in her field of study.
Herrera was well on her way finishing her program at Everest when she suffered a devastating setback, the miscarriage of her third child. Herrera was committed to finishing the program, however, and after taking some time to recover, she completed her externship at MVP Physical Therapy in Lakewood. The MVP supervisor was so impressed by Herrera’s skills and determination she was hired full-time after her externship.
“We reviewed dozens of deserving Dream Award nominees, but Johanna’s story really stood out,” said Everest College-Tacoma campus president Susan Wynne. “She was on the wrong path and really turned things around when she came to Everest to fulfill her dream of developing a career plan. Once she got her life on track, she then suffered the heartbreak of a miscarriage. For Johanna to bounce back from the hardships she endured throughout her life is truly an inspiration for us all.”
“I’m really humbled and grateful to be part of such an amazing school,” said Herrera. “My time at Everest was all part of a plan to turn my life around and at every turn, from the teachers, to the students, to the staff, I found a level of support and caring I will never forget.”
