VIDEO: Half Moon Bay Surf Team Speaks

Meet the students and their coaches as they share how riding the waves has influenced their lives.

Last Friday, students from the Half Moon Bay Surf Team paddled out with world-class surfers as part of the on Mavericks Beach in Half Moon Bay.

The team, which comprises 44 students from and , does much more than surf.

Many run and swim as part of their training regimen. Three times a year, the students clean up Surfer's Beach. The team also works with youth from San Francisco's Larkin Street Youth Services a few times a year to teach them how to surf, according to Rocky Raynor, Cunha's team coach and CEO of LLC.

They are also required to keep up their grades. Taken together, the team's average GPA is 3.54, Raynor said.

Half Moon Bay High School coach Marty Phelps joined his team in the paddle out ceremony, and spoke alongside the students as to the value of surfing as a lifelong sport.
