Ice Skating on the Coast

Half Moon Bay's first outdoor ice skating rink debuts this weekend at Harbor Village.

In a town as recreational, traditional and historic as Half Moon Bay, with family and kid friendly things to do just about every weekend any time of the year, you’d think the Coast has seen it all.

Yet here’s a first: an outdoor ice skating rink is coming to town.

The rink will be ready for skating at Harbor Village this weekend, Dec. 10 and 11, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“The merchants at Harbor Village collectively had been working on ideas over the past few months on bringing family activities and events to harbor village during the month of December,” said Harbor Village property manager David Seaton.
“Since it had never been done before, it was ultimately decided that choosing one weekend in December would be the best way to launch Half Moon Bay's first ice rink.”

The rink is artificial and is “environmentally friendly in nature compared to the traditional water-based rink,” said Seaton.

It’s approximately 1,500 square feet and can hold up to 35 people at a time. The rink will be located outside in the Quad area in between Crab Landing, and front entrance. It’s $5 to skate for 45 minutes. Rentals are provided at an additional cost of $3.

“We are hoping that Coastside families come out and have a enjoyable and memorable experience with the longer-term goal of further establishing Harbor Village as one of the premier holiday and event destination venues on the Coast.”

Skaters will rotate every 45 minutes. To avoid long lines, reservations will be taken on site so people can shop and eat before their skate time.

Seaton adds that the skating rink is something the merchants would like to continue in years to come.

“If it turns out to be a success, and there is support from the community, the goal would be to have the ice rink run for a longer length of time next year,” he said.
