Map: 2012 Shark Sightings in California

Discovery Channel's Shark Week 25th anniversary began Sunday.

Discovery Channel's 25th annual Shark Week marathon began Sunday, reminding us of our endless fascination with the iconic predator, and that there seems to be more sharks in our local waters than ever before.

This interactive map was compiled from data made available by the Shark Research Committee, a nonprofit that documents shark attacks and sightings in the Pacific Coast of North America.

To learn more about specific shark sightings listed on the map, consult the Pacific Research Committee's website.

"You are watching live video of sharks (and many other marine animals) in the "Ocean Voyager" exhibit at Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Ga. This live feed is provided by our partners, Ustream," Discovery Channel explains on its site.

Shark Cam will be live throughout August 2012 from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST each day.
