Food Runners, a nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating hunger in San Francisco, is extending its reach to help the hungry in San Mateo County.

The organization relies on volunteers to pick up excess perishable and prepared food from businesses such as restaurants, caterers, bakeries, hospitals, event planners, corporate cafeterias, and hotels and delivers it directly to shelters and neighborhood programs that feed the hungry.
Dave Karlin of Belmont has been helping deliver food in San Francisco since last fall, and he is now turning his efforts toward the Peninsula, and he needs help.

“We are looking for volunteers. If this cause is important to you, it only takes one hour per week.  The difference you can make is immediate, as the food you pick up and deliver will provide a meal to somebody that night,” said Karlin in an email.

Karlin explained that Food Runners in San Francisco delivers over 10 tons of food per week.

“That’s a tremendous number of meals, but it has taken years to reach that level of success. We would like to make a quick impact in San Mateo County and are in the middle of targeting both donors and recipients. But the volunteer Food Runner is what makes it all work, so step up and give an hour. Try it out. It’s fun and rewarding!” Karlin added.
