Montara Youth Raise Funds for Tornado-Affected Families

Timely project as toll for 2011 now tallied as "deadliest" year on record since 1950.

Youth in Montara are working with The Greenhouse, a local nonprofit organization, to help two families rebuild after the devastating tornadoes that hit the country earlier this year.

The project is especially timely given today's news from the Associated Press (AP). AP reported that with 523 tornado-related deaths in the U.S. to date, 2011 is the "deadliest" year for tornadoes since 1950, according to data from the National Weather Service. The number surpassed the highest-recorded number of deaths of 519 after Joplin, Mo. City Manager Mark Mohr's announced today that three more deaths had been confirmed from last week's tornado, according to AP reporter Nomaan Merchant.

Based in Montara, the Greenhouse organizes programs for local youth (mentoring programs, service projects) with the aim of building community around making positive change in Montara, the Coastside, and other parts of the country and the world which could use assistance.
