Volunteer ‘Food Runners’ Needed on the Coast to Help Feed the Hungry

The non-profit organization has recently expanded its reach to help the hungry in Half Moon Bay and Pacifica.

Dave Karlin, a resident of Half Moon Bay and Belmont, is hoping to enlist some local volunteers to help deliver food to hungry families on the Coast.

Karlin is a volunteer with Peninsula Food Runners, a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating hunger in San Francisco and cities throughout San Mateo County.  The organization identifies sources of excess perishable food — from restaurants, bakeries, caterers, event planners, and businesses and delivers it directly to shelters and neighborhood programs that feed the hungry.

“Today, Peninsula Food Runners delivers over 5,000 pounds of food per week in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties," said Karlin. "That’s a tremendous number of meals, but it has taken months to reach that level of success.  We would like to make a quick impact in Half Moon Bay and Pacifica and are in the middle of targeting both donors and recipients."

The organization is currently looking for volunteers, especially on the Coastside.

"If this cause is important to you, it only takes one hour per week. The difference you can make is immediate, as the food you pick up and deliver will provide a meal to somebody that night,” said Karlin. "The volunteer Peninsula Food Runner is what makes it all work, so step up and give an hour. Try it out. It’s fun and rewarding!”
