Tomorrow, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers are asked to meet at Pillar Point Harbor in front of the Harbor Master's office in Half Moon Bay for an Undaria Removal Event.
Undaria is a long, wavy greenish-brown kelp found dangling off the docks and boats in the marina that’s in Half Moon Bay.
"The removal event give us a chance to remove the reproductive Asian Kelp and their young individuals before they re-populate the harbor," said marine biologist Chela Zabin with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, which has organized with an invasive species management coalition, Bay Area Early Detection Network (BAEDN), to spot and remove undaria in Bay Area locations. "New participants are encouraged to come."
Wear layered clothing, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and bring plenty of water and snacks.
