Half Moon Bay High School is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2010. Students can choose from a rich variety ofMore offerings based on their goals or interests, be it in academics, extracurricular activities, or sports.</p> <p>The school boasts many achievements in all areas as well. School bands have won local, state and national awards. Academically, Half Moon Bay High students have higher standardized test scores than the state average. And the school's chapter of Future Farmers of America has raised steers, hogs, lambs, turkeys, and rabbits for exhibition.</p> <p>Despite these accomplishments, though, perhaps the school's most notable aspect is the high level of involvement from parents and the community. Principal Mary Streshly says that although Half Moon Bay High School is much smaller than other Bay Area schools, the level of engagement with students is much higher.</p> <p>"Half Moon Bay High is the flagship of the community," she says. "They want this school to be a great school."</p>

Pilarcitos Alternative High School

Pilarcitos Altenative High School is a program for students in grades 10-12 who wish to complete their education in aMore nontraditional environment. The school has been part of the Cabrillo Unified School District for over 30 years.</p> <p>Students come to Pilarcitos High School for varied reasons. Most are students deficient in the number of credits they need to graduate, but others attend the school because they want to graduate early. A few students are involved in full-time professional pursuits and need to enroll in independent study.</p> <p>In addition to the traditional subject areas, students can enroll in Computer Literacy, G.E.D. (General Educational Development Test), and C.H.S.P.E. (California High School Proficiency Examination) programs and Typing.</p> <ul> </ul>

Manuel F. Cunha Intermediate School

Cunha Intermediate School (commonly referred to as "Cunha") enrolls students from grades 6 throughMore 8. In addition to the core offerings of language arts, math, social studies, science and physical education, students choose from a wide variety of electives, including art, ecology, shop, home economics, drama, technology, multimedia, music appreciation and leadership.</p> <p>The school also boasts an award-winning music program that students can enroll in as an elective for all three years.</p>

Since 1996, Ms. Kitty's Harmony Road, formerly the Lisa Spector Music School, has provided the Coastside with anMore outlet for learning music. Lisa Spector, the school's founder, is an acclaimed concert pianist with degrees from Juilliard and the University of Southern California. The school offers instruction for piano, flute, voice and guitar. It also holds monthly music concerts. Call for an appointment.
Fly on the Wall Art School & Gallery

Founded in 1993 by owner Susan Carkeek-Harris, Fly on the Wall Art School is a fully equipped and stocked art studio andMore gallery. Group art lessons are offered for kindergarten students to adults with classes individualized for each student. Students work independently and help themselves to materials as needed. Private lessons and an extensive summer art camps program are also offered. During evening and weekends, workshop parties for adults are scheduled to teach jewelry making, painting, drawing, sculpture and more.
Coastside Children's Programs

Founded in 1975, Coastside Children's Programs is a nonprofit organization that runs two preschools and threeMore school-age child care programs on the San Mateo County coast. A total of 300-350 children attend all sites. Agnes Chan, Executive Director, describes the organization's teaching philosophy as "child-centered."</p> <p>Two of Coastside's sites are in Half Moon Bay: one preschool and one after-school program for school-age children. The school-age program planted a garden in Summer 2010 featuring vegetable crops, a pumpkin patch and apple trees. </p> <p> </p>

Los Ninos Nursery School

Tom Whiting, the school's founder, emphasizes that the philosophy and curriculum of Los Ninos Nursery School areMore based on the interests and needs of young children and not based on their family's child care needs. Located at the edge of Half Moon Bay State Beach and the Coastside Trail, the school operates out of a converted house and has an outdoor play area that looks out onto an open field. The school publishes a monthly newsletter that can be downloaded from their website.</p> <p>The school has been open since 1974 and has an open door policy -- meaning that visitors are welcome to drop by without an appointment. Whiting says that he has had many former students at Los Ninos come back and enroll their own children as well.</p>

Coastside Parents' Nursery School

Coastside Parents' Nursery School is an unusual hybrid of a public state-run school and a private co-op preschool.More Open since 1959, its co-op status  encourages parents to be directly involved in the course of shaping their child's education. The state provides funds for low income children to enroll.</p> <p>Located in a quiet residential area, the school is run out of a converted house. There is a generous outdoor play area with a slide, swings, picnic tables, and benches. The indoor area has spaces for artmaking and play areas as well.</p> <p>Although the school has only one faculty member, Victoria Fuller, parents volunteer during the week in 3-hour shifts. Parents who volunteer three hours per week qualify for reduced tuition fees. Instruction is in English and Spanish.</p> <p> </p>

Alvin S. Hatch Elementary School

Hatch Elementary School is a public school offering a variety of unique and innovative ways for children to learn.More Colorful murals, a large playfield and a vibrant community garden contribute to the lively atmosphere on campus.</p> <p>Students have the choice of attending the English Immersion or Spanish Immersion program. Students enrolled in the Spanish Immersion program attend classes taught in both English and Spanish, and learn from peers whose first language is different from theirs.</p> <p>The Health, Environment, Agriculture and Learning Program gives students the opportunity to learn science, environmental issues and health in nontraditional ways -- by working in the school's on-site community garden and selling the produce at the local farmer's market.</p> <p>All students benefit from weekly music classes and are introduced to a variety of musical instruments and styles.</p> <p>The school's Parent Teacher Organization produces a monthly newsletter to increase communication with the larger community. The student Garden Club has hosted a booth at the Coastside Farmers Market, and their produce was featured at Sam's Chowder House. Led by instructor Kitty Rea, the company follows the "Music in Me" program, which consists of 26 books and five distinct age-appropriate courses beginning with toddlers and continuing to age 11. The program also offers courses for teens and adults as well as piano classes, early childhood classes and private lessons.
