Phone: 843.416.8707 Hometown: Glennville, Ga. Bio: I moved to Mount Pleasant in the summer of 2011 to launch Mount Pleasant Patch. Prior to Patch, I was a reporter at the Chattanooga Times Free Press where I covered crime, politics and education. I've also reported for the Savannah Morning News and a handful of community newspapers in southeast Georgia. See my journalism portfolio. After 13 years working in the print-media industry, I chose to leave so I could gain modern skills and experience in more sustainable business model. But Patch is a new concept to many folks. So, in addition to covering crime, government and business in Mount Pleasant, I'm also out spreading the word about what we're doing. If you're just stumbling onto our site, read a little more about us. In short, we're a network of 860 full-time, professional journalists delivering news on hyper-local Patch sites all across the country. There are three other Patch sites in the Charleston area: West Ashley, Summerville and Goose Creek. Your Beliefs Unlike a lot of other media outlets, Patch encourages editors to disclose our political views while never advocating for one side in our content. So while I'm proud to say I'm a Democrat, I disclose my affiliation reluctantly, because I truly believe most readers couldn't tell my leanings by reading my work. I routinely get angry emails from both liberals and conservatives, which indicates to me that I'm equally irritating both sides. Local Hot-Button Issues If you want to get to know a town, I strongly recommend becoming a reporter. It's the best way to immerse yourself in what makes a community tick. In Mount Pleasant, I've narrowed the hot-button topics to four key issue: Family safety, education quality, Responsible growth and government responsiveness. We'll focus on these topics as we move forward. Personal junk Here's the part where I tell you about my hobbies. Feel free to get back to reading the news, because here's where it gets real boring. I enjoy traveling and fancy myself as a good cook. Photography, reading and writing are hobbies that extend beyond my workday. I grew up in rural Glennville, Ga. We're famous growing the largest quantity of Vidalia Sweet Onions in the world and for the World Championship Turtle Race each May. Glennville is also home to NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe and his equally talented brother, Sterling.
