Big Explosive Boom Wakes up Half Moon Bay

Did you hear that loud explosion Wednesday night? Many of your neighbors did.

Wednesday night at about 10:40 p.m. residents from El Granada to Half Moon Bay were abruptly jolted to attention by an incredibly loud explosion that sounded like it came from the Miramar area.

Many were woken up by it.

Theresa Cossman writes on Half Moon Bay Patch's Facebook page: "It was so loud in El Granada! It woke us up!"

But many more residents wondered, what is that?

"Did anyone else hear that really loud, sustained explosion-like sound about 10 minutes ago? So loud we heard it indoors ... scary," posted Robert D'Onofrio on Half Moon Bay Patch’s Facebook page.

Eva Derksen writes in, "What the heck was it???!!!!" and Shelly Sikkema asks, “Old fireworks? M-80? Fire arms?”

Turns out it was fireworks.

According to Dep. Rebecca Rosenblatt with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, officers and the San Mateo County Fire Dispatch were called to Alameda Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard in Miramar where it was determined that fireworks were set off on the beach.

People as far as Poplar Beach and even Ocean Colony in Half Moon Bay heard the boom. Here's what some had to say about it on Half Moon Bay Patch's Facebook page:

Mary Goulart Heard it near Popular as well. Scared me!

Steve Maller We're over near Poplar beach, too, and it was really loud. It made me recall the horror of the San Bruno pipeline blast. Hopefully everybody's OK over there...

Adrienne Asher Heard it all the way down here near Poplar Beach...

Judy Shintani Yes heard in downtown hmb

Some saw the sky light up as far as Ocean Colony:

Jacqueline Norman heard and saw the light flash down here from Ocean Colony!

Camilo Perez Not just a boom, but a huge flash of light as well seen in ELG.

Brian Bergen There was a huge flash of light -- as bright as lightning about 2 sec before it boomed.

No suspects were found, according to Rosenblatt, but sheriff's were called to neighborhoods in both El Granada and Miramar, where the explosive noise was reportedly the loudest, and patrolled the area.
